New format for CONMEBOL Sudamericana in 2021

CONMEBOL Council approved changes to achieving the participation of clubs from all countries in the Group Stage. 56 teams will take part in the tournament that will include 157 matches, with the Single Final scheduled for November 6

CONMEBOL Sudamericana in 2021 will be more competitive and representative. At the last meeting of the CONMEBOL Council, modifications were approved in the tournament format aimed at ensuring that each of the countries is better represented in the different phases of the competition.

New format does not imply alterations in the usual calendar or an overload for clubs and associations and will be played with the same number of teams as at present.

In this new version, Phase 1 is added, played in the countries, with home-away matches between their participating clubs, to qualify for the Group Stage. Thereby, at least two teams for each country in the CONMEBOL Sudamericana Group Stage is ensured. To these will be added the 12 teams from Argentina and Brazil classified directly and four more clubs from CONMEBOL Libertadores Phase 3.

A total of 56 teams will take part in the tournament that will include 157 matches, with the Single Final scheduled for November 6.

Teams that have finished third in each CONMEBOL Libertadores group will be added to those classified for the Round of 16.
