The CONMEBOL Libertadores is a yearly international football tournament organised by the South American Football Confederation, created in 1960 under the name Copa de Campeones de América. In 1965 the tournament adopted the name Libertadores in honour of the leaders of the Spanish-American and Brazilian wars of independence in South America. It is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world and the most prestigious club-level football competition on the continent.
Currently, the CONMEBOL Libertadores is contested by 47 teams from the 10 Member Associations with 155 matches from February to November, under a format of Preliminary Phase (Rounds 1, 2 and 3), Group Phase and Final Phase (Round of 16, Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Final). Since 2019, the Final is held as a single match at a neutral venue. CA Independiente (Argentina) is the team with the most titles (7). The current champion is Palmeiras from Brazil.
